Screen Printing vs DTF: Which Is Right for Your Order?

Compare screen printing and DTF printing side by side. Learn which method is best for your custom apparel order based on quantity, colors, fabric, and budget.

When it comes to custom apparel, choosing the right printing method can make or break your project. The two most popular options — screen printing and DTF printing — each have distinct strengths. At The Extreme Print Lab , we use both methods daily and can help you pick the best fit for your order. What Is Screen Printing? Screen printing is the classic method: ink is pushed through a mesh stencil (screen) directly onto fabric. It's been the industry standard for decades and excels at large-volume orders with simple, bold designs. Each color requires a separate screen, so the more colors in your design, the higher the setup cost. What Is DTF Printing? DTF (Direct to Film) printing is a newer digital process. Your design is printed onto a special PET film, coated with adhesive powder, then heat-pressed onto the garment. There are no screens to set up, which means full-color, photographic designs are just as easy as single-color logos. Side-by-Side Comparison Color count: Screen printing gets expensive above 3–4 colors. DTF handles unlimited colors at the same price. Minimum quantity: Screen printing is cost-effective at 24+ pieces. DTF is economical even for 1 piece. Detail level: DTF reproduces fine gradients and photo-quality images. Screen printing is best for bold, flat graphics. Fabric types: Both work on cotton and blends. DTF also works on nylon, polyester, and performance fabrics. Durability: Both are highly durable when applied correctly. Screen printing inks cure into the fabric; DTF transfers bond via adhesive and heat. Turnaround: DTF has no screen setup time, so rush orders are faster. Screen printing requires screen creation (add 1–2 days). When to Choose Screen Printing Choose screen printing when you have a large order (50+ pieces), a simple design with 1–3 colors, and you want the softest possible hand feel. It's also ideal for Pantone color matching on corporate uniforms and team apparel. When to Choose DTF Choose DTF when you need full-color artwork, small quantities, fast turnaround, or printing on performance fabrics. It's perfect for custom hats , individual samples, and designs with gradients or photographs. Can You Combine Both? Absolutely. Many of our customers use screen printing for their bulk uniform orders and DTF for their one-off promotional items, event shirts, or gang sheet transfers they press themselves. Frequently Asked Questions Which method is cheaper for small orders? DTF is significantly cheaper for orders under 24 pieces because there are no screen setup fees. Which lasts longer after washing? Both methods last 50+ washes when properly cured/pressed and cared for. Follow our apparel care guide for best results. Can I get same-day printing with either method? DTF is more likely to accommodate same-day requests since there's no screen setup. Contact us to check availability. Ready to Get Started? Not sure which method is right for your project?
